GOVERNMENT REGULATIONS FOR EXPLOSION PROOF/ DUST IGNITION PROOF VACUUMS

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) has announced random inspections along with the reissue of their National Emphasis Program (NEP) on Combustible Dust.

This program stresses the agency’s strict regulations and expectations regarding combustible dust related explosion prevention. Dust accumulation of more than 1/32”, the thickness of a paperclip, covering more than 5% of the plant is an example of what the OSHA auditors will be looking for during their inspection according to the NEP.

Many food manufacturing facilities attempt to comply with plant maintenance standards with shop-style vacuums, considering traditional methods like sweeping do not pick up fine dust.

These shop-style vacuums, while perfect for general cleaning, are not fit to pick up combustible dust such as sugar and cinnamon. Also, their use may violate OSHA’s Combustible Dust NEP. Therefore it is essential to use approved electrical vacuums in dusty areas.
