The potential occupational health hazards encountered in the Packaging Industry is due to the raw material used. Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, and sells. Packaging companies (known in the materials industry as “converters”) are engaged in the conversion of commodity raw materials such as polymer, board or paper into value‑added consumer or industrial packaging.
Production of these items involves subjecting heterogeneous mixtures of hundreds of chemicals to heat, pressure, and catalytic action during a variety of manufacturing processes. As a result, the work environment may be contaminated with dusts, gases, vapors, fumes, and chemicals. Workers may be exposed to these hazards through inhalation and skin absorption during product manufacturing.
