Class II, Division 1: combustible dust airborne
Class II is the combustible-dust classification, and Division 1 is where the dust is airborne in ignitible quantities under normal operation — or where equipment failure could both produce that cloud and supply the ignition source. This is the classification most dust-handling plants are arguing about.

What puts an area in Division 1
A Class II, Division 1 location is one where combustible dust is in the air under normal operating conditions in quantities sufficient to produce ignitible mixtures; where mechanical failure or abnormal operation of machinery might produce such a mixture and also provide an ignition source through simultaneous equipment failure; or where combustible electrically conductive dust may be present in hazardous quantities.
That third limb matters more than it first appears. Conductive dust — the metal dusts of Group E — is treated with particular severity, because it can bridge terminals and short equipment as well as burn. Where Group E dust is present in hazardous quantities, expect the Division 1 conversation rather than a Division 2 one.
Groups E, F and G
Group E covers combustible metal dusts, including aluminium, magnesium and their commercial alloys, and other dusts whose particle size, abrasiveness and electrical conductivity present comparable hazards. Group F covers carbonaceous dusts — carbon black, charcoal, coal and coke. Group G covers the remaining combustible dusts that are not electrically conductive: flour, grain, wood, plastics, many chemicals and most food powders.
Those groups are why a single generic claim of dust suitability is not useful. Equipment has to be suitable for the Group actually present, and the certificate names the Groups explicitly. PrestiVac's EX1 HEPA line carries Class II, Groups E, F and G on UL 1203 certification.
Dust-ignitionproof is not the same as explosionproof
In everyday speech both are called explosion proof, and this page uses that phrase too because it is what people search for. Technically they are different protection concepts. Explosionproof construction, associated with Class I, contains an internal explosion and prevents flame propagation to the surrounding atmosphere. Dust-ignitionproof construction, associated with Class II, excludes dust from entering the enclosure and limits external surface temperature so that dust outside cannot ignite.
The distinction is worth knowing when reading certificates, because a listing for one is not automatically a listing for the other. Read the Class, Division, Group and temperature code as a set.
Accumulation is part of the assessment
Dust classification is not only about clouds. Layer accumulation matters, because a layer insulates hot surfaces, provides fuel for a secondary event, and can be lofted by a primary explosion. This is the mechanism behind almost every catastrophic dust incident: a modest primary event disturbs accumulated dust and the secondary explosion destroys the building.
That is why housekeeping sits inside the safety case rather than beside it, and why NFPA 660 — which consolidated the former NFPA 61, 484, 652, 654, 655 and 664 — treats accumulation control as a core requirement.
Classification is assigned by your own electrical or process engineer and accepted by the authority having jurisdiction. Bring that classification to the equipment conversation rather than working backwards from a product.
What this means when you specify recovery equipment
In Class II, Division 1 the recovery equipment itself must not become the ignition source. In practice that means a conductive, grounded and bonded path from hose tip to collection container, anti-static accessories rather than ordinary plastic hose, filtration that keeps fines away from the drive, and a power unit suitable for the classification and Group.
Where the dust is a Group E metal dust, additional decisions follow — including whether an immersion-separation approach is appropriate so that recovered reactive fines are kept wetted rather than accumulating dry in a container.

It carries two distinct scopes: the EX1 HEPA drum-type line is covered for Class I, Gp. D; Class II, Gps. E, F and G; Temp. Code T3C; the EV EX HEPA line is covered for Cl. II, Div. 2, Gps. F and G. The EV scope is narrower — no Class I, Division 2 only, and Groups F and G only, which excludes Group E conductive metal dusts. Commercial, indoor use only, in hazardous locations.
